Random Access Memory or RAM acts as the machines workspace while the computer is switched on, but any information stored here will be deleted once the computer is switched off. The capacity of computers is often described in terms of the amount of available RAM. The more RAM, the larger the programs and data that can be stored and processed. Computers continue to use more and more memory.
Years ago Windows 95 required at least 16 MBytes of memory, and today the current operating systems use Giga-bytes of memory. Each application program such as Word, or Excel requires their own memory requirements. Since Windows allows more than one program to run at the same time, the more memory available the better.
