Door Access Control Purchase Guide

The Regret Free Guide to Access Control

Access Control Product Guide

You have been asked to select an Access Control System for your organization. The “ask” could have been from your boss or maybe from people around you who requested more security. Besides increased security, what are your key objectives when selecting the right system? These objectives should encompass your current needs and anticipated future requirements.

A door access control system consists of door readers, controllers, management software, and other devices that can enhance your security, such as elevator and gate controllers. Here are some things to consider before purchasing your door access control system so that you don’t have any regrets later:

Door Reader Choices

Access Control Door Readers

The choice of door reader also depends on the type of credential you would like to use. The door reader and credentials are key factors in the security of a door access control system.  Each type offers various levels of protection.

Note that a door reader is only one part of the access control system. Always check that the rest of the access control system supports a specific type of door reader and credential.

Biometric Door Readers

Biometric readers identify a human characteristic, such as your face, palm, or fingerprint, and are much more secure than standard card credentials. Card credentials can be stolen, lost, or given to another person. We can’t lose our biometric signature.

Why use biometric readers? They are the most secure type of credential, and they eliminate the cost and control issues associated with card credentials.

Mobile Credentials on Your Smartphone

Your smartphone can be your key to access. You don’t need to carry a card credential.  Many access control systems include Apps that connect your smartphone to their readers using Bluetooth. This mobile credential is the latest way of controlling your door access.

Why use Smartphone mobile credentials? People can share their card credentials with someone else, but it’s unlikely they’ll share their smartphone. They are more convenient than cards and don’t require costly card credentials or controls.

RFID Card Credentials

RFID Card readers are convenient yet provide the lowest security levels. The oldest type of reader can read cards that operate at 125 kHz. It provides the lowest level of secure data transfer between the card and the reader.

Smartcard readers support 13.56 MHz formats, which provide a higher level of data security. They have a higher level of encryption.

Why use RFID card credentials? The door readers cost less than the biometric and mobile door readers. It’s a good choice for small organizations with infrequent employee turnover.

Electric Locks

Electric Lock

Two types of electric locks can be used to secure a door. Among the most common electric locks are the electric strike and the magnetic (Mag) lock, each offering distinct advantages and best suited for specific scenarios. Understanding the differences between these two types is essential to ensure the security and functionality of your access control system.

Electric Strike

An electric strike replaces the standard strike plate in a door frame. It works with mechanical door locks and latches, allowing the door to open when power is applied (or removed, depending on configuration). It is primarily used on doors with lever or knob handles. Egress is provided by turning the door latch, making it compliant with fire codes.

Magnetic (Mag) Locks

A Mag lock uses a strong electromagnetic force to secure a door. It consists of an electromagnet installed on the door frame and a metal armature plate on the door. It keeps the door locked as long as power is supplied to the electromagnet. It requires backup power to keep the door closed in a power failure.

Why use a Mag lock or a strike? The mag lock is easy to install, but harder to wire to comply with fire safety rules. The strike is more complex to install but allows egress, as you can turn the doorknob to leave a secure area. Door Controllers

Door Controller

Door readers connect to a Controller. Some door readers include a built-in controller. The controller provides the intelligence that receives the credential information and decides if that number is allowed to enter the door. If the credential number is correct, the controller unlocks the electric lock.

Controllers or panels can have many door readers connected to them. The controller is placed near the doors it controls. The old-style controllers required many wires for each door reader. The latest controllers connect to the network and have simpler door wiring.

Reader-Controllers are devices installed at each door that include a built-in controller. The Isonas system is an example of this type. This system is not as flexible as a door reader with a separate controller. It has a limited selection of door readers.

What controller is best? It depends on your objectives. If you would like to use a biometric door reader, control, elevators, or gates, or other specialized door readers, then a separate controller is best. To learn more, read our article Access Controller Comparison.

Access Control Management Software

Access Control Management Software

Most Door Access Control systems include software that manages specific types of door access hardware, such as door readers and controllers. Some advanced door access management software solutions offer more capabilities, including elevator control and integration with IP Camera Systems.

Hexagon dC3 Advanced Video Management System

This Video Management Software solution integrates IP Surveillance Camera management with Door Access Control, Visitor Management, and More.

Based on the Ocularis and Qognify Video Management Software products, this product provides a unified physical security technology ecosystem designed to manage the entire lifecycle of an incident and minimize its impact. This innovative solution integrates Command, Control, and Collaboration (C3) capabilities to control the security center environment and enable advanced event detection.

Armatura Advanced Access Control Software

Armatura is primarily an Access Control Management solution that includes a gateway to other security solutions, such as the WAVE video manager solution.

It’s a comprehensive solution that provides a gateway to multiple security solutions.

This is a web-based solution that includes various modules, such as Video Management System, Access Control, Time & Attendance, and more.

Isonas Access Control Software Solutions

The Isonas door management software is available as a cloud subscription. The cloud service, offered as a subscription, provides basic access control functions, making it a good small-to-medium solution. The downside is that it doesn’t support some advanced functions, such as elevator control.

Hartmann Access Control Management Software

The Hartmann access control management software only works with the Hartmann Access Control devices. It provides advanced functions such as if-then logic, allows you to control elevators and visitors, and integrates with IP camera systems.  IP readers can also be used in parking lots to control a gate. These long-range access readers allow a credential to be used up to 25 ft. away from the reader. This access control management software is designed for an enterprise that requires advanced functions.

Summary of How to Get the Right Access Control System

Selecting the right Access Control System means balancing today’s security needs with future growth. The best systems integrate door readers, controllers, locks, and management software to ensure safety, convenience, and flexibility. From biometric and mobile credentials to video integration, thoughtful choices now can prevent costly regrets later and create a smarter, more secure environment.
