How to Select and Set Up an IP Surveillance Camera
Choosing the right IP surveillance camera involves more than selecting a camera with the highest resolution. The camera, lens, mounting location, and viewing angle all work together to determine whether you capture the details you need.
The goal is simple: install the right camera in the right location so you can clearly see what is important.
Before selecting a camera, determine exactly what you want to see.
Different locations often require different levels of detail. For example:

A camera’s resolution determines how much detail it can capture, while the lens determines how wide an area the camera can view.
These two specifications must be selected together.
A wider field of view covers more area, but spreads the available pixels over a larger scene. As a result, objects become smaller and facial details become more difficult to recognize.
A narrower field of view concentrates the available pixels into a smaller area, providing greater image detail.

The higher the pixel density, the easier it is to identify people.

Once you know the camera resolution and the desired pixels per foot, you can determine the maximum field of view using:
Field of View = Horizontal Camera Resolution ÷ Pixels per Foot
Example
Suppose you want to recognize people you already know and require approximately 80 pixels/ft.

Higher-resolution cameras allow a wider viewing area while maintaining the same level of facial recognition.
The lens determines how far and how wide the viewing area is.
A wide-angle lens covers a large area but provides less detail.
A telephoto lens narrows the field of view, making distant objects appear larger and easier to identify.

“How far can an IP camera see?”
The answer depends on the amount of detail you need. A camera can “see” objects that are miles away, even the moon, but without sufficient pixel density, you won’t be able to recognize faces or read license plates.
The important measurement isn’t distance, it’s whether enough pixels cover the object you want to identify.
