Choosing the right IP surveillance camera involves more than selecting a camera with the highest resolution. The camera, lens, mounting location, and viewing angle all work together to determine whether you capture the details you need.

The goal is simple: install the right camera in the right location so you can clearly see what is important.

Start by Defining Your Objectives

Before selecting a camera, determine exactly what you want to see.

Define Objectives for surveillance

Different locations often require different levels of detail. For example:

  • At a building entrance, you may need to identify a person’s face.
  • In a parking lot, you may only need to monitor vehicles entering and leaving.
  • In a warehouse, you may want to observe activity over a wide area.

Resolution and Field of View Go Together

A camera’s resolution determines how much detail it can capture, while the lens determines how wide an area the camera can view.

These two specifications must be selected together.

A wider field of view covers more area, but spreads the available pixels over a larger scene. As a result, objects become smaller and facial details become more difficult to recognize.

A narrower field of view concentrates the available pixels into a smaller area, providing greater image detail.

Many cameras are available with either:

  • Fixed lenses – economical and ideal when the viewing area is known.
  • Varifocal lenses – adjustable after installation, allowing the field of view to be fine-tuned.

How Much Resolution Do You Need?

The amount of detail is commonly measured in pixels per foot (pixels/ft.) across the field of view.

The higher the pixel density, the easier it is to identify people.

Typical guidelines are:

  • 75–80 pixels/ft. – Identify someone you already know.
  • 160–170 pixels/ft. – Forensic identification of an unknown person.
  • 180–200 pixels/ft. – High-confidence identification under challenging conditions.

As the field of view becomes wider, a higher-resolution camera is required to maintain the same image quality.

Calculating the Required Field of View

Define the Field of View

Once you know the camera resolution and the desired pixels per foot, you can determine the maximum field of view using:

Field of View = Horizontal Camera Resolution ÷ Pixels per Foot

Example

Suppose you want to recognize people you already know and require approximately 80 pixels/ft.

Higher-resolution cameras allow a wider viewing area while maintaining the same level of facial recognition.

Selecting the Right Lens

The lens determines how far and how wide the viewing area is.

A wide-angle lens covers a large area but provides less detail.

A telephoto lens narrows the field of view, making distant objects appear larger and easier to identify.

A common question is:

“How far can an IP camera see?”

Define the Lens

The answer depends on the amount of detail you need. A camera can “see” objects that are miles away, even the moon, but without sufficient pixel density, you won’t be able to recognize faces or read license plates.

The important measurement isn’t distance, it’s whether enough pixels cover the object you want to identify.

Camera Placement

A site survey helps determine the best camera locations.

When planning camera placement, consider:

  • How large an area needs to be monitored?
  • Do you need to detect activity or identify faces?
  • Will the camera operate during both day and night?
  • Will bright backlighting or shadows affect image quality?
  • Should the camera trigger alarms or AI analytics?

Final Camera Adjustment

Once the cameras are installed:

  • Adjust the lens to frame the desired viewing area.

  • Confirm that lighting conditions provide acceptable image quality during both day and night.
  • Fine-tune the camera angle to eliminate blind spots.
